The Firearms Act (s. 117 (h)) provides authority for the proposed regulatory initiative.

Description

The firearm storage regulations for individuals and businesses will be amended to include strengthened secure storage and display measures aimed at deterring firearm theft and reducing diversion to the illicit market.

Enhanced storage requirements for firearms will have financial impacts on firearm owners and businesses coming into compliance with the new secure storage regulations.

Consultations may be held in fiscal year 2021-22 with affected stakeholders in the firearms industry.

Further information

Thefts from residences and firearm businesses represent a growing domestic source of illegally acquired firearms. Since 2009, break and enters to steal a firearm have more than tripled. In 2018, there were 3,504 reported break and enters involving the theft of firearms. Of those, most firearms reported stolen were rifles and most incidents involved the theft of multiple firearms.
